Privacy Policy
FamilyRoost helps Calgary parents compare schools and neighbourhoods. We keep the data we hold about you small, and we never sell it. This page explains what we collect, who helps us run the service, and the choices you have.

The short version
- We collect your email so you can sign in, plus anything you choose to save (like a shortlist of schools).
- Addresses you look up are used to find your catchment schools and are not tied to a public profile of you.
- We never sell your data or share it for advertising.
- You can ask us to show you, correct, or delete your data at any time.
What we collect
- Account details: your email address, and an optional display name.
- What you save: shortlists, saved searches, and Family Project criteria you create.
- Address lookups: an address you enter is geocoded to find its designated schools. We cache the result to keep the service fast, and we record a one-way hashed lookup event so we can enforce free-tier limits — we do not build an advertising profile from your searches.
- Billing: if you buy a plan, our payment processor handles your card. We store only a payment/customer reference and what you purchased — never your card number.
- Basic technical data: standard server logs and privacy-respecting product analytics (which pages are used), tied to a pseudonymous id, not your name.
How we use it
To sign you in, show your designated schools and Roost Ratings, save your shortlists and projects, send the emails you ask for (sign-in links and, if you opt in, rating-change alerts), process purchases, and understand which features are useful so we can improve them.
Who processes your data
We use a small set of trusted providers to run FamilyRoost, each only for its stated purpose:
- Supabase — accounts and database (hosted in Canada).
- Vercel — website hosting.
- Resend — sign-in and alert emails.
- Dodo Payments — payment processing (they handle your card details).
- Mapbox — turning an address into a map location.
- PostHog — pseudonymous product analytics.
- Google — only if you choose to sign in with Google.
Cookies
We use cookies for essentials only: to keep you signed in, to count free lookups fairly, and (if enabled) pseudonymous analytics. We do not use advertising cookies.
Where your data lives and how long we keep it
Your account data is stored in Canada and kept while your account is active. Some providers that support the service — our product analytics and Google sign-in — may process limited data (such as a pseudonymous id or your Google account email) outside Canada. Ask us to delete your data and we will, except where we must keep a minimal record of a purchase for accounting.
Your choices
- Access, correct, or delete: email us and we will help.
- Alerts: turn rating-change emails off in your account or via the unsubscribe link in any alert.
- You have rights under Canada's PIPEDA and Alberta's PIPA.
Children
FamilyRoost is a tool for parents and guardians. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes
If we make a material change to this policy we will update the date above and, where appropriate, tell you.
